Beyond the Streets

Patrick Martinez

Activism

Los Angeles–based artist Patrick Martinez works across a wide range of media to examine the visual language of his surroundings. He composes his pieces from elements of visual content that are freighted with coded meaning — street-level neon signage, distressed stucco walls, security bars on windows, flower-district bouquets, gentrification fences and even the all-American Pee-Chee scholastic folder. An activist element appears in his artistic documentation of police brutality in America as well as his reconfiguration of imagery synonymous with low-income neighborhoods. Martinez “remixes” the meanings inherent in these various content sources, and in so doing reveals how our environments communicate to us every day. Patrick Martinez earned his BFA with honors from the Art Center College of Design in 2005. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
