Mark “GONZ” Gonzales’s free-form riffing approach to skateboarding seeps through his bold line work, reminiscent of the fanzine- and marker-filled Southern California world from which he sprang. Gonzales rose to iconic status as a professional skateboarder in the 1980s, known for pioneering the sport as well as drawing his own best-selling skateboard graphics in his 20s. He is a member of the Supreme brand’s team and has been collaborating with them since their inception in 1994, with his large-scale sculptures gracing their stores in New York, Paris, London and Japan. He started Krooked Skateboards in 2002, where he continues to oversee the brand’s graphics, design and advertising. In addition to being an artist and “the most influential skateboarder of all time” as named by Transworld Skateboarding magazine, Gonzales is also a poet and an author and maintains his professional skateboarding career as a member of the adidas skate team.
