Beyond the Streets

FAITH XLVII’s Deconstruction series involves the labor-intensive process of piecing apart and reassembling a variety of media into new configurations. In these works, she deconstructs books, atlases, money and found objects from across the globe, speaking with texture about spiritual yearning, borders, migration and place while highlighting notions of value and exchange. FAITH XLVII is a South Africa–based artist who began painting in 1997, three years after the end of apartheid. Using a wide range of found and rescued objects, her work often channels the international destinations that have been imprinted on her after two decades of exhibiting in and interacting with urban environments.
